Peak Divide ONEr ‘26 Report

In the early hours of 4th October 2026, the fourth edition of the ONEr saw 195 shufflers/shifters [delete as appropriate] set off to journey the 77KM from Sheffield to Manchester across the glorious Peak. One convoy. An abundance of groups, nationalities and experiences:

The Night Before
6pm - 10pm

Signing on, allocation of tracker, commitment to starting - the hardest part of running 77km is already behind.

Nerves are quietened by good company. More than half of tomorrow’s convoy sit on long tables to carb load and natter over three courses. A neon S(H)OUFFLE sign flickers as a backdrop. Sticky toffee pudding, alarms set, sleep.

The Witching Hour
3am - 4am

A time where supernatural forces are at their peak, and the vale between this world and others is at its thinnest - quite believable as you make your way through a sleeping Sheffield from the hotel you’ve spent barely half a night in. Our convoy gathered at The Mowbray on Kelham island and just after 4am, set off in the direction of another city. Headtorches, on.

Trackers come alive and start beating west through the suburbs.

The Blue Hour
6am, ish

A line of bobbing headtorch lights crosses Houndkirk Moor and climbs slowly but steadily up the Burbage Valley.

Pockets of mist cling to the gritstone edges and the sky above slowly turns from deep black to a cold blue. PD purple and Altra red lights act as serene beacons on the horizon, guiding the way west.

First Light
7am, ish

The sun comes up over the moors and the landscape the ‘dots’ have been moving blind through gradually appears. Blue turns to orange, orange to yellow, before everything is bathed in a pale light that makes the indistinct crossing from Stanage Edge to Bamford Edge a bit more feasible.

Elevenses Eightses
8am, ish

An ancient woodland descent into coffee on the dam wall and silver service snacking.

20km in but still up before most - Win Hill, Hope Cross and Crookstone Our Moor to ourselves. A quietly determined rhythm ensues; a beeline for brekky.

Second Breakfast
9am - 11am

A hearty breakfast awaits, at the foot of Kinder.

Some grab and go, some sit for a while having come so far already. This time last year the journey jarred at this point, but the weather is glorious.

A pocket full of pick-&-mix makes the climb back onto Kinder all the more bearable.

High-Noon. Literally.

Midday

The crossing of Kinder Plateau, the highest and most exposed part of the route. Dots move slower and steadier; across flagstone trails, through black bog and gritsone tors, with a trig point to signal the major turn. A Kinder Surprise awaits. Onwards west. Halfway and the distance behind them is matched by the distance still to come.

Aperitivo Hour:
4pm… a touch early, maybe

Long afternoon hours on heavy legs after lunch at Gnocchi Gap as Manchester comes into view.

Through the Hinterlands and onto the canals, where the route flattens; a challenge for weary minds. Pont des Pickles marks not far to go.

Golden Hour:

5pm - 6pm

Low evening sun lights up the canal towpaths and the edge of the city.

Many of our convoy have made it to the end of their journey - friends and family await with signs and bells for those still inbound. The shuffle is real.

The Gloaming:
6pm - 7pm

Dusk falls, colour drains from the sky. Almost home. Party atmosphere at the finish but all eyes are on the trackers still moving.

The comedy walks begin. Signs of shuffling such a long way.

Second Dark:
7pm onwards

Headtorches go back on; for some, the journey ends in the same darkness it began.

The convoy is complete. Arrival in Manchester, all having journeyed further.
